Perfect Plants to Add to That Spring Garden

The cool weather of early spring can be a great time for gardeners. This is especially true for those longing to get started on their outdoor spring garden again.

Luckily, there are plenty of vegetables to get the gardening season started. However, some of the best to grow include snow peas, kale, and radishes.

Snow Peas

These are cold-weather vegetables. The best guideline is to start planting snow peas about 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost. Additionally, it is important to note that these plants germinate best when the soil is between 50 and 60 degrees F.

To start growing snow peas, be sure to give the plants 1-2 inches between each other and plant about ½ an inch deep. These plants tend to grow tall, so be sure to support the vines’ growth by supplying something for them to climb.

Finally, snow peas are best when harvested while the pods are still flat, the peas inside just beginning to swell.

Kale

Kale is often thought of for its great nutritional properties. Due to these properties, it is referred to as a superfood.

To start growing kale, put the seeds directly in the garden when the soil reaches 40 degrees F. These seeds should be buried 1/2 inches deep and spaced about an inch apart.

These leaves can be eaten in a variety of ways including eating the leaves raw or cooking them in the soup.

Radish

In order to allow for good root formation, the radishes should be planted either in the early spring or late fall—times when temperatures are cooler.

Additionally, since the plants are ready to harvest in just 3-5 weeks, they are great for continuous production.

These are just a few great crops to plant when starting a spring garden.
