Container Garden, The Perfect Solution For Gardeners With Limited Space

If you are a gardener with limited space, starting a container garden may be the perfect solution. Luckily, many plants are great for container gardening including various vegetables.

Here are some tips to get started.

Sun Exposure

Make sure the area containers are placed in has enough direct sunlight. Unfortunately, it is very easy to overestimate the amount of sun an area receives.

However, many vegetables require full sun to thrive. This makes a more accurate assessment of the area an important measure. To do this, check the desired location throughout the day, making sure the area receives at least six hours of direct sunlight.

Temperature

It is important to consider the overall climate. In hotter climates, the plants may need to be shaded in the afternoon. This helps keep the plants from overheating. Additionally, stay away from containers that are dark-colored or metal. These have a greater chance at cooking the roots of the plants.

In contrast, many vegetables will not grow well in cold soil. For many plants, the soil should be a minimum of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, if you live in colder climates, make sure to harden off any seedlings before taking the container outdoors. This will help ensure their survival through the colder temperatures.

Watering

Many vegetables require soil that is evenly moist, without being too wet. The best way to determine if a plant needs watering is to put your finger into the soil about an inch deep. If the soil is dry, it’s a good sign to water. During the summer, plants may need to be watered daily.

Another consideration is the drainage. A container should provide proper drainage to prevent plants from drowning. Make sure there is at least one large hole, or several smaller ones, located at the bottom of the container. Additionally, it is a good idea to try elevating the container to prevent the hole from plugging.

There are many different ways to start a garden. Container gardening is a great option for those looking to garden but stuck with limited space. But make sure you check out some tips for starting seeds indoors—it can be a tricky process if you’re not properly informed!
