Mistakes to Avoid When Growing Houseplants

Are you looking to spruce up your house with some houseplants but don’t know where to start? Luckily, we have a few tips to help you get started creating your own green oasis.

Forget about Aesthetics; Focus on the Houseplants’ Needs

Instead of thinking about where a plant would look best in your home, change your mindset to think about where best it would thrive. Each plant requires different things and it’s essential to consider everything when starting your green oasis.

Choosing Locations with Enough Sun

Every plant needs a different level of sunlight to thrive and when this is ignored it can lead to the plant getting attacked by pests and diseases.

Fortunately, most plants come with information about sunlight preferences. But finding the best lighting can take some trial and error, so be sure to monitor the plants closely.

Water Properly

Another common mistake people make when starting their plant parenthood is watering too much or too little. It’s essential to develop good watering habits. This requires consistency and paying attention — your plants will tell you what they need, and the key is figuring out how to read the signs they provide.

If the plant starts wilting, it’s telling you more water is needed. Meanwhile, plants that are looking washed out or start yellowing could be getting too much water.

Keep Plants Stationary

As Justin Hancock, Costa Farms horticulturist, explains to The Spruce, plants are typically “rooted in one spot” their whole lives. This means that they’re not used to the constant change that can happen when moved around.

So, before you decide to move a plant, make sure to consider the location’s conditions. Is the plant currently thriving? If so, how similar are the conditions of the new location to the old one? If they’re too different, the plant could undergo a lot of stress to adapt, and it’s probably better to keep the plant where it is.

Overall, it’s essential to remember that houseplants are more than decoration, they are living things that require attention and care to thrive.
