Hummingbirds are beautiful, brightly colored creatures that will astound even the most experienced bird watcher. These amazing pollinators thrive in a variety of habitats and can be brought to your very own garden.
Three Plants That Attract Hummingbirds
There are a variety of plants that attract hummingbirds, and not all of them are red! Even though red is known to catch the attention of these beautiful pollinators, there are a variety of nectar-rich plants of all different colors to consider.
Plus, the best way to attract hummingbirds to your garden is to aim for a mixture of plants with different bloom times, textures, and sizes.
Not sure where to start? Here are a few to help you start planning and planting!
Bee Balm
Bee balm is a long-blooming perennial containing red or light purple vibrant blooms. These plants are one of several native North American species and are perfect for gardeners living in the USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9.
To ensure the plants thrive, plant bee balm in a location with slightly acidic and moist soil. Those living in the North, try to plant your bee balm in a location that receives full sun; for gardeners in the South, locations with partial shade are best.
Lantana
Lantana plants, also known as Lantana camara, are known for the citrusy smell they produce. These broadleaf evergreens will produce a mixture of red, orange, pink, yellow, blue, and white blooms.
For the best growth, be sure lantana plants are placed in an area where they can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day; the shrubs will flower less if planted in shady areas. Additionally, make sure the soil is well-draining with a neutral pH and they are watered thoroughly; the soil shouldn’t dry out.
These plants are often kept in hanging baskets as smaller annuals. However, in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 10, these plants can be grown as perennials.
When grown as perennials, the plants can grow with a spread of 8 feet and a height up to 6 feet.
Important Notes: Lantana plants are toxic to pets, so make sure they’re kept in areas pets don’t traverse. Additionally, lantana plants are considered invasive to certain areas including Arizona, Florida, and Hawaii; be sure to check for any restrictions on planting them in your area.
Rhododendron
Catawba rhododendron is an evergreen bush. These shrubs bloom during the spring, peppering the dark-green, leathery foliage with breathtaking flowers. These flowers can be white, red, rose, or lavender in color and are known to attract hummingbirds.
When properly cared for, the plants can reach a spread of 4-6 feet and a height of 8- feet. For the best growth, be sure to plant these bushes in partial shade and acidic soil. The rhododendron tends to grow best in areas within the USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8.
Please note: the rhododendron is toxic to people and pets.
