Free online classes

Now that it looks like we will be in some sort of lock down for the next six months at least, we should think about how to maximize that time. If you are like me, you have already organized the closets and garage, finished many items on your To-Do list, and spent time catching up with family.

In the last few months, I have discovered that I need structure to be successful. I like to wake up before anyone else and plan out my day. Now, this involves helping my daughters to plan out their day too. We will continue to work in the garden, daily walks, chores, work/school. However, we need something else fun or challenging to do.

Did you know you can take a legitimate college class from a world-class university online and for free? Yes, it it true, one of my daughters took a class from MIT last summer through edX. They are not the only ones, this is a hub that represents 140 institutions. Most universities have some online classes for free. Next is OpenLearn, that site has academic courses, and classes on health and physiology.

Khan Academy primarily targets k-12, but does have some solid life courses, including personal finance and art history.

Maybe you want to learn more about investing. I started out with Vanguard, but most large firms should offer something similar.

Many seniors want to learn more about computers. Medicare.org has put together a basic list of free resources. You can search for free online computer classes for seniors, but if you drop seniors from the search terms, you can find classes to teach you coding and everything else you might want to learn.

It would be impossible to list all the credible sources for free online classes. But, the ones we have listed here will provide more than enough to get you started and have been personally used by myself or my immediate family. Maybe this is the time to learn about that career you have always been interested in exploring.

PS – After writing this, I found another course from a partnership with Khan University and Brookings Institute, Introduction to the US health care system. I think I will bookmark this one for myself.
