Check out this great article by June Fletcher at AgingCare.com. It’s about the benefits of gardening as “one of the best activities” for seniors.

Fletcher writes that gardening “stimulates all the senses, awakens our connection with nature and with our companions, and rewards us with fresh flowers and nutritious fruits and vegetables.”

Some seniors may understandably may be hesitant about an activity requiring “bending, lifting, kneeling, squatting, weeding and pruning… dealing with the sun, heat and bugs.” Thankfully, there are adjustments that can be made to accommodate older people.

Fletcher suggests buying large, easily accessible plant pots and even setting up an “automatic irrigation system.” She provides two great lists of tips to create a senior-friendly garden and tend such a garden.
