Starting Your Indoor Garden

First thing’s first, choose what to grow in the garden. Herbs and greens are a great way to start indoor gardening and often don’t take up too much space.

It’s recommended, when working with greens, to try using microgreens. These plants are smaller versions of popular greens and often contain more nutritional value than their mature counterparts.

When choosing herbs for the indoor garden, consider choices that are used in many recipes, allowing you to utilize gardening as not only a hobby but also a means for sustainable living.

After choosing what to grow, gather the proper supplies. The supplies needed for gardening indoors include:

  1. a sunny, south-facing window or a grow light
  2. a shallow container with drainage holes
  3. organic potting soil
  4. seeds of the plant you wish to grow
  5. a watering can or mister

How to Start

  1. To start gardening indoors, place 1-2 inches of the organic potting soil into containers. Be sure the surface of the soil is an even plane.
  2. Next, scatter the seeds all over the surface of the soil.
  3. Cover the seeds with another thin layer of soil.
  4. Place the container with seeds into your drip tray. Be sure the tray is placed in that sunny window or under grow lights.
  5. Make sure to water your indoor garden every few days! Note: When you’re watering, be sure not to overdo it — the soil needs only to be kept moist.

You should start to see plant growth within a week. When the leaves unfurl, you know the plants are ready for harvest!

When harvesting, be sure to trim your plants above the soil line! Then, all that’s left is to rinse what has been harvested and enjoy!
